In the last few days I’ve been uploading photos to my flickr.com page (because my site is experiencing yet again some technical difficulties).
Himos Festival & TUSKA OPEN AIR METAL FESTIVAL
Photos are wating for right time appear on web. Himos will be published this week, Tuska a week after Himos.
Uusia kuvia julkaistaan ihan lähipäivinä!
Don’t be trigger-happy, or you could shoot yourself in the foot
Okay guys, so here’s the deal:
There is a slight problem with releasing the photos me and my friends have snapped. Currently there are over 2 200 photos from RMJ and Tuska taken with my camera alone. That is almost 6 GB worth of images (more than one normal DVD). I think I have more photos somewhere else, but that’s how many I found on my laptop and this other computer. So far I have uploaded 51 random images, go look at them here. My friend Antti has lots of photos too that he’s going to release on my site, so hopefully you understand this little delay we’re having :)
There is no way anyone has the time or interest to browse all the photos to find just one picture. We will be hand-picking out a select few images that we think have the most entertainment value, but as promised, we will try to release all of the images (excluding the super-blurry ones and the ones that have too much nudity ;).
We will have to put the date and time visible by each photo, so if you remember when and where I snapped a pic of you, you will have a better luck finding yourself in the photo gallery. This will require some modification of the gallery software and we’re on it!
Expect some technical difficulties for a few days.
RMJ - Raumanmeren Juhannus 2007
Finally it’s over. Or maybe I could have partied for one or two more days, it was over before I even realized. I almost feel bad about even thinking of NOT going there…
When my friends asked me what I was going to do during midsummer, I said that I didn’t have any definitive plans yet (I was planning to be in either Amsterdam or at my family in Sweden), so they offered me VIP-tickets to the RMJ festival. At first I thought “Gosh, 3 days of partying in the sun, I’m really too old for that”. Seriously, how could I even think such a thought. That party was so rejuvenating and now I think it could/should have lasted somewhat longer.
Naturally, I took lots of photos, and when I was too tired to take them myself, I put the camera into the hands of a friend so that there was non-stop documentation :)
I’m not sure if I dare to watch those photos yet… at festivals, many things are better to be forgotten ;)
But pictures will be up soon, or any day now, so please come back later!
Next week there’s yet again Tuska Open Air metal festival, I’ll be there like last year. Hell yeah!
Camera repairs
Or rather technological gadget repairs.
I got my Canon 20D camera back from the repair service yesterday. It set me back 180 euros and 70 cents. They billed me for one replacement part and 1,5 hours of work. I would have done it myself if I had the required training, skills, spare parts, adequate working environment… You get my point. I don’t think modern devices are something one should try to repair on your own. They have lots of miniscule parts that easily get lost, and it’s pretty damn sure there will always be one or two items that don’t fit in when you try to reassemble the whole thing together.
Realizing that I happen to have some sort of travel insurance, I shall ask my insurance company to reimburse some of the costs. I’ve never ever contacted an insurance company, but I think it will be a hassle. I’m always skeptic when it comes to getting free money*.
But I’m so happy to have my precious camera back. I’m not in any way a materialist or attached to my belongings, but my camera is one of those items that I want to keep around me at all times, like my cellphone, passport and home keys.
* Nothing is free in life… I pay about 180 euros a year to my union, and I don’t even know all my benefits. Maybe it’s time to start using them
School’s out
Not for me though, I’m just a working man. But all preliminary level and high-school students are now officially on vacation. One thing I like about this is that everyone is dressed so much better than usual. Suits and dresses, and the girls have really worked on their hair.
It would usually mean a portrait photo-opportunity heaven for me, but not this year because I still have my camera in for repairs!
Yesterday was a busy day nevertheless, I went to the YleX concert in Kaisaniemi, just like I do every year. I go there for the music and the summer festival feel.
In hindsight I think I should have used my film cameras as backup, but for some reason I opted for my old Dimage7i instead. Oh man, I really regret this choice. The abysmal focusing speed is indeed the reason for ever growing tired of that camera. It has a long reach tele, but it sure makes auto-focus real slow and inaccurate. Manual focus is almost impossible to achieve. It didn’t even help one bit that I hadn’t used my old Minolta for a looong time (last time was in Syria I think), so all the knobs and buttons had become somewhat unfamiliar to me.
After some many failed attempts of having any good shots taken, I finally gave up for the evening and had some beer instead, and watched football (soccer) on the big screen in Rautatientori, Helsinki.
I’m back from the heat
Vacation photos from Syria are online. Go to the Exhibition now, ok?
I’m sorry for being lazy and putting staight out from my camera, without even removing noise or adjusting colors… I’ll make a better albums “some other day”.
It was (as expected) hot, hot and hot. We drank a lot of water, and enjoyed the dry climate. I’ve never experienced such a heat while being quite pleasant at the time. The Finnish sauna is a lot different to that kind of heat.
Now the question on everyone’s mouth is: Would I recommend Syria to anyone as a tourist attraction?
I would say no. The country has it’s hospitality and most people we met spoke good English, but if you like to spend your summer on the beach sipping margaritas, you would quickly be bored in a country that offers mostly old history and culture as excitement.
If you have the time to visit, and aren’t afraid of little dirt and insane traffic, then by all means visit! But get a paid driver, don’t even dream of getting behind the steering wheel there.
All pain is over
Pictures are up NOW in the photo exhibition. More pictures will come up after 23rd of June. Between 15 and 22 of June I will be on vacation in a very special country, hopefully I will have good photo opportunities there. Stay tuned!
Pain is real
Sorry… I’m experiencing technical difficulties (broken hardware), I am trying to get another computer on which to work with… Tuska pictures WILL be coming up TONIGHT! :)
Walburg! Vappu!
Pictures are in my photo exhibition
Photo gallery is online
I have now installed the first version of my photo gallery. Please go and visit!
I decided to use the Coppermine Photo Gallery software, it’s seems popular enough and gets updated from time to time. I have a custom theme so it should match my site better.
